What is the impact of too much time on the internet on reading development?

Spending too much time on the internet can have a negative impact on reading development in children. When children spend too much time on the internet, they may have less time for reading books, which can lead to a decline in reading skills. This is because reading requires practice and exposure to a wide range of texts, and if children are not spending enough time reading, they may not develop the necessary skills and strategies to become proficient readers. Excessive internet use can also lead to decreased attention span, which can make it difficult for children to focus on reading for extended periods of time. This can impact their ability to comprehend and analyze complex texts, and may result in a lack of interest in reading altogether. Reading is an important way for children to build their vocabulary, as they are exposed to new words and concepts. Excessive internet use can lead to a decline in reading, which can result in reduced exposure to new vocabulary and a limited understanding of language. The internet provides a vast amount of information, but it also encourages a reliance on digital media for information. This can impact reading development because it may lead to a preference for short, easily digestible pieces of information, rather than longer, more complex texts.

This makes a lot of sense. Children's internet usage should be limited daily. Daily reading is so important and necessary to become proficient readers. Daily reading will improve fluency and expand vocabulary. After reading comprehension should also be reviewed. Children today spend to much time on technology.

Children today spend may to much time on social media and the internet and we do know this is bad for young children. In today's society parents are too busy so their kids are left to the internet for entertainment. If they are going to be on the internet then they should be using educational apps if nothing else.

I agree Louise times have really changed. I also agree with the article that children have a hard time with focus and paying attention in class. Reading takes engagement and focus to be able to comprehend what is read and excessive internet use is a big factor.

This is a hot topic. Kids are on the internet way more than they should be due to parents being busy with work which causes problems for kids decline in reading skills and vocabulary development. Focus is difficult for kids in a classroom setting and this is a major cause.

We know the negative impacts this can have in the classroom too. Students today really struggle with focus and attention.
